If Pelosi is going to Taiwan independent of the Biden administration, she should definitely step aside as speaker. She is not the person to make a decision to risk starting a war. That decision belongs to Biden.

I admired her stubborn resistance to Trump. But it's maybe the same bullheaded temperament with which she engages in foreign policy. No one needs more complications with US overseas relations. It's hard enough with one administration at a time doing crazy u-turns, let alone two.

But why on earth would Biden's lot be so weak as not to go themselves, if poking the hornets' nest is their new way of dealing with China?

There's something awry here. It may be that the US knows something about Chinese intentions that we don't. But Pelosi going to Taiwan is a very odd thing in the context of the traditional US-China model. It provides China with the sort of pretext they wish for to invade the island.

For myself, I want to deal with things sequentially. Put Putin back in his box. Then see if China decides being as aggressive as it has been is such a good idea. I think they'll back down once Russia is defeated in Ukraine and badly damaged as a result.

I'd hate to think this was just a poke in the eye. The US-China relationship over Taiwan is one of constructive obfuscation. You don't want to give China an excuse to invade the island.
