There was plenty of backlash from both sides of the aisle when the Department of Homeland Security suddenly set up a Disinformation Governance Board and named Nina Jankowicz as its chair. Conservatives had a particularly good reason for opposing it, especially since Jankowicz had called the Hunter Biden story “a fairy tale about a laptop repair shop.” It seemed she’d been spreading plenty of disinformation herself on social media, and it all leaned in one direction politically.
The New York Times, after that debacle, seems surprised that there’s a political divide over “disinformation.” Democrat-run states, it reports, are pushing for stiffer rules against spreading false information. Rules? Or laws? On the other side, red states seem to be pushing for fewer rules, i.e., freedom of speech.
The New York Times (@nytimes) ~ Several states run by Democrats are pushing for stiffer rules on the spread of false information, while Republican-run states are pushing for fewer rules. In this deeply polarized era, even the fight for truth breaks along partisan lines.

Gotham UES (@Gotham_UES) ~ Orwell was a prophet.
Robust Megafauna (@WeSavageFew) ~ Strange way to frame the fight against state censorship.

Weimar Silver Baron (@BankerWeimar) ~ So, Democrats want to restrict free speech?

Randy Boyd - "witty repartee goes here" (@ranboy) ~ This isn't about truth. This is about free speech. Free speech means free. It's really not hard to understand.
It's just hard for those without good defense for their positions to agree with the fundamental concept of free speech.
Pay attention to who fights it.
Big_A (@asomer) ~ That's because Republicans don't believe the government should get to decide what the "truth" is. We believe every person has the freedom to decide for themselves.
Anthony Bialy (@AnthonyBialy) ~ The fight over letting government decide what’s truth has been joined by you Quisling statist simps.
John J (@JohnJtheSane) ~ Sounds like Democrats just want power and Republicans want freedom.
What’s new?
