First time he paid to get rid of the problem, settling rather than fighting. Second time he fought and showed the woman who claimed to have caught something from him had used her friend's altered doctor's report to frame him.
Because US courts are so expensive and the reputational damage can be so profound meanwhile, Carrey originally chose to pay, in spite of being entirely innocent of the claim against him as it subsequently emerged.
It was the exact same set up for Prince Andrew who wasn't only subject to risk to his own reputation but to the royal family's. The fact he paid didn't mean he was guilty. Just that the damage of fighting the claims was more expensive.
