It's the best way to defeat Russia. Show them they can't compete.
But Putin doesn't know how to do anything except doubling down. So he's likely to decimate his own army rather than back down.
I suspect the US package is going to cause huge concerns among Putin's sane generals and his wealthy backers. Will they allow him to continue with this? Or will some of them call up the friends they have in the west and offer to do a removal deal? They will know that Putin's model leads to catastrophe and nowhere else.
