Or put another way by the BBC:

"Russia "senses" its defeat in Ukraine and is therefore trying to intimidate the West against supporting Kyiv by warning of the threat of World War III breaking out, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has tweeted.

"Russia loses last hope to scare the world off supporting Ukraine. Thus the talk of a 'real' danger of WWIII. This only means Moscow senses defeat in Ukraine.

"Therefore, the world must double down on supporting Ukraine so that we prevail and safeguard European and global security."

Kuleba's tweet, written in English, came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Western arms shipments to Ukraine meant Nato was "in essence engaged in war with Russia" and there was "considerable" risk of the conflict escalating."

Well, obviously, that's the thing to do then. Supply Ukraine with weapons, that is. Because whenever Russia makes threats and demands, that's because it is weak and hopes to scare people into doing what it cannot achieve by force. It is beginning to realise it is losing badly. Against its far smaller neighbour.

But also, there's another, easier solution. Russia should get the hell out of Ukraine. It's a sovereign country which cannot be wished away simply because Russia is greedy and invents myths to justify its appetite. Russia can simply decide not to be at war with Ukraine (and the west if it wishes to define it that way), a fate it has chosen for itself. It would have been far better for Russia to have left Ukraine alone.

Now all it can do is to seek compliance via nuclear threats. But nuclear threats will be there tomorrow as they have been for decades. The reason people don't use such weapons actively is because we use them passively, due to the threat of mutually assured destruction. If we submit to Russian threats of nuclear force over Ukraine, we might as well give them the whole world. They'd use the same threat like dominoes.
