A formality.

But I think Boris is trying to give India help getting back on a better path.

I expect there will be an arms supply deal in the works to replace the Russian weapons India has with British equipment, which seems fairly effective relative to Russian gear. The US may do so too, but that would likely be a few steps down the road once trust is established.

At some point, they and Japan will probably join AUKUS as we are making a sort of NATO of the Pacific via that organisation to counter China. And strengthening India and making sure it is on our side is very important. There's little doubt that the west is going to turn to India to replace China as a supplier of goods so long as it sways in our direction.
