Or put another way, Ukraine is not Russia's toy. It's not its brother. It's not a piece of Russia pretending to have a sovereignty of its own. It's a separate country with its own identity, constitution, laws and government which happens to be next to Russia.
When Russia learns to respect that is when peace will appear in that region.
It's only through respectful cooperation that anything worthwhile will happen. But it requires a massive change in Russian culture to expurgate its imperialist attitudes. That and very strong fences.
