Ukraine must be sent more heavy weapons to help kick Russian soldiers out of the country, Liz Truss said today amid a row between allies over whether to supply tanks.
The Foreign Secretary used a Warsaw press conference alongside her Ukrainian counterpart to say Kyiv should be given even more weapons of the type' demanded by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He has made no secret of his desire for Nato nations and others to supply heavy armour in the wake of civilian massacres in places like Bucha.
Boris Johnson and others are understood to be discussing whether tanks can be supplied to Ukraine by countries using the same hardware.
But western officials today suggested the Biden administration in Washington is acting as a throttle on the plan, over fears that the war machines could breach rules allowing only defensive weapons to be supplied.
One said that the US was 'not minded' to support the supply of T-72 tanks of the type used by Ukraine from sympathetic neighbours, adding: 'They have this offensive dimension, they are not purely defensive. They would not be particularly relevant to the military activities the Ukrainians need to undertake.'
However Ms Truss used her press conference tonight to say: 'We also need even more weapons of the type the Ukrainians are asking for.
'The fact is that being tough is the only approach that will work. Putin has escalated this war and this approach is vital to ensuring he loses in Ukraine and that we see a full withdrawal of Russian troops and Ukraine's hand is strengthened at the negotiating table.'
