I opposed Merkel when she invited in a million refugees for further distribution within the EU, which at the time we were part of. She shouldn't make policies for every country in Europe. But that was the effect.

But if Germany houses and funds immigrants, that's never been a problem for me.

The trouble for the UK with Merkel was that a whole bunch of folks wanted to end up here. And we can't absorb disproportionate numbers. We don't have spare houses lying around.

More than happy to welcome a reasonable number of Ukrainians [no precise number for "reasonable" yet]. But I think the main burden should fall on Germany, because of its huge contribution to the issue.

Ukraine is under the cosh because Germany wanted cheap gas and was willing to pretend there was no problem with that and the dependency it created. But they fed the Russian monster.

I thought you opposed Merkel when she took in refugees?

How Angela Merkel’s great migrant gamble paid off
....

“I put it simply, Germany is a strong country,” the German chancellor told the media at a press conference in central Berlin on 31 August 2015, trying to address concerns about the steeply rising number of people – mostly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan – applying for asylum in Germany that summer.

“The motive with which we approach these matters must be: we have already managed so much, we’ll manage this.” During the German TV broadcast of her interview, headlines flashed up to report that Hungary was sending trainloads of people to the German border, 20,000 of whom turned up at Munich central station the following week alone.
