Peaceful ideas come and peaceful ideas go. But autocrats always pop up, always have and always will. They are part of the spectrum of human nature. There will be Caesars, Charlemagnes and Napoleons. And Trumps and Putins.

It is also a reliable feature of history that autocrats are less powerful than they outwardly appear, because in the end, footsoldiers don't want to fight hard for them and/or their inner circle can't abide the will to power forever. It seems like many of Russia's soldiers have little enthusiasm for battle. But it may be the oligarchs that Putin most fears.
