Although to be fair, Hitler was copying Japanese tactics in Manchuria and then China. So if we want to remove Hitler as an example (my normal way of doing history) then let's say Putin is adopting the Japanese Manchurian model, using a false pretext to grab a portion of a country.

So how are we responding?

Same way we all did in the 1930s, basically. By trying to avoid confrontation. Putin will be funding the peace movement right now. We need to arm ourselves, and heavily to arm Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic States. Putin will only stop if he thinks invading is more painful than not doing so.

Yep. Putin sees Hitler as a model, not a monster.

This is the Sudetenland all over again. For German-speaking people, replace with Russians.

Next stop for Hitler was the entirety of Czechoslovakia, then Poland, attempting to create lebensraum for the Third Reich. For Putin, it's Ukraine, then the Baltic States, attempting to restore the Soviet bloc.

The same process led to a world war before.

Oh the joy.
