What is it about continental Europe, faced by the threat from Russia, that it relies on the US to defend it?

Even Trump knew this much. That the EU should spend more than it does. Germany in particular is pathetic. But it's also the attitude of hiding behind the US that is irksome.

Not that we can afford to let Putin take them out. But for goodness' sake, contribute more to the defence of Europe. Adding Ukraine to Russia makes the combined country a 180-190m entity. More scary than today. If nothing else, supply Ukraine with lots of defensive weapons.

It seems fairly likely that Putin's plan to invade Ukraine is because he perceives the US as weak, especially following the Afghanistan withdrawal.

So one part of what he is doing is to demonstrate US weakness.

But if Biden can scare Putin into a reversal, I'll stand corrected about Afghanistan. That Biden got away with it without a huge cost, from a US perspective.

It's already a known fact that continental Europe is weak on defence. It's tragic that it doesn't contribute more.
