US deaths from covid looks relatively high. I suspect it is still mostly caused by delta not by omicron. Our deaths remain surprisingly low, even though there's a lag between infection and death.
Also, there might be a stats issue.
One UK newspaper claims that a fairly large chunk of UK Omicron hospitalisations are of people who arrived for other reasons and were found to have covid. So they might arrive for cancer and then the doctor finds they have non-symptomatic omicron, because so many do. That person is then counted as a covid hospitalisation. If they die, then they become a death with covid number, even if it wasn't death from covid.
Unless the newspaper is exaggerating, it seems a really clean, internationally-comparable number still eludes us.
