I was disappointed, yet confused, he certainly would have a vast choice of women to date.

These are old complaints.

In this one it seems drinking was an issue. And maybe mixed messages, she invited him in & offered him more alcohol.
Twenty years ago... there has to be a shelf life, no?

This sounds like a pattern rather than a misunderstanding or mischaracterisation situation.

But this was a man who could surely find women who would say yes. So I don't really understand why coercion was part of his vocabulary.

And as usual, money is an important potential motive to consider.
