It seems to be far less lethal, but so contagious it can overwhelm health services by sheer weight of numbers.

They say the symptoms are more like a cold for most people.

So the reason they are trying to stop people from congregating is to spread infection out over as long a period as possible. That way, fewer people will be infected at the same time. And the hospitals can keep functioning.

Looking back at South Africa, it hasn't caused a mortality wave, and that ought to be showing by now, as its vaccination rate isn't very high.

Except for those who experience severe symptoms, I think this may prove a useful thing in the long run as it will mean the anti-vaxxers develop their own immunity as a result of catching it. And the population as a whole will now be fairly immune.
