We know from the Meadows powerpoint there was a genuine plan for a coup.
But when the moment occurred on January 6th that was part of the plan, Trump wanted to watch, not act, and many Republicans were unwilling to join in.
I wonder if what the Trump team wanted in the end was a scary mob that would put pressure on Mike Pence not to certify the result, and not a full-on violent coup. Something that they could assert was lawful.
Or it could just be there was no actual agreement about the plan and so different people had different ideas. And so it fizzled. Incompetence was Trump's saving grace.
