...in nam where everybody had live ammo an "accidental discharge" was a court martial offense. Usually settled with an Article 15 plea deal.

Technically, imposing penalties under Article 15 in the Army and the Air Force requires proof of a violation beyond a reasonable doubt. Imposing penalties under Article 15 in the Navy and the Marines, by contrast, requires clear and convincing proof, which is a lesser standard.  

...usually a fine and confinement to base for a proscribed period of time. I dunno if it cost ya the good conduct ribbon or not. My good conduct ribbon was a tribute to my ability to not tell officers what I really thought.
