See the thing that bothers me is this. When Biden was under pressure for the decision he took, he lied. He said AQ was no longer a threat. He must have known it is. His people kept saying there was a risk to the evacuation from terrorists, which gave the game away. But because he lied, people had their views set in stone - they saw only benefits and no costs to the decision.

That's why I was concerned by Biden's speech. It didn't deal with the issues squarely. If he'd said, we're leaving and the price of leaving is that AQ will recover, you can respect that. But pretending the only thing involved was whether the US nation-building effort was working was disingenuous. There are major costs to the decision to leave.

Now there are two big, new issues.

1. Now that he has let AQ come back to life, what is he planning to do about it?

2. What is he going to do to restore America's trust deficit? Because in spite of US reports suggesting this is a non-issue, people in allied countries like the UK, France and Canada are absolutely seething. Americans may not care about such matters, but they ought to. A burden shared is a burden halved. If you want allies in future, treat them as allies now. Biden's idea of humanity separates the world into Americans and non-Americans, us and them. That's a very old mistake.

They hadn't figured this out? Really? Good grief.

Least bad decisions suck. But at least you should know the consequences of leaving and pooping on your allies while doing so. The terrorism hazometer is going up to red for VERY SCARY.

Meanwhile, China is already talking to the Taliban about the rare earths the country holds.

"WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - With no U.S. troops or reliable partners left, jails emptied of militants and the Taliban in control, doubts are mounting within President Joe Biden's administration over Washington's ability to stem a resurgence of al Qaeda and other extremists in Afghanistan, six current and former U.S. officials told Reuters.

Afghan security forces whom the United States helped train crumbled as Taliban militants made their way through Afghanistan in less than two weeks, leaving the United States with few partners on the ground.

"We're not in a good place," said a U.S. defense official, who requested anonymity to discuss the issue.

Weeks before the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States by al Qaeda, the lack of visibility regarding potential extremist threats is a chilling prospect for officials."
