In truth, Afghanistan isn't worth the time or the trouble it would take to subdue ... and even then, in time, resistance would reformulate.
The only proper response to terrorists who occasionally come out of their holes in Afghanistan to prick and poke the major international powers is merciless, total war for a long enough period of time to blast the Afghani people back to the Stone Age. And, the United States certainly does not have the stomach for delivering ruthless, brutal attacks that deal the widespread death and destruction it would take to convince the inhabitants to crawl back into their caves and stay there.
