...sinkhole is what Im thinking as well. J D McDonald wrote a book called "Condominium" which detailed the collapse of a condo during a hurricane. It is a fiction novel based on scientific data. Good read if ya ever get time.

Re: “like a foolish man who built his house on sand.” I agree with the above. As it happens, the ABC affiliate I have been watching through watchnewslive is Miami-based WPLJ. It's been providing round-the-clock coverage of the condo collapse recovery effort.

My thought is that the engineers investigating the collapse will conclude that the building was structurally sound but the ground upon which it was built was unstable. I think they'll find a sinkhole. It's hard for even a well built building to stay up if the ground gives way.
