Until the mRNA treatments came along, he'd have been written off as a quack. I'm not sure that his mRNA position changes that. After all, even a stopped clock is right twice per day.

Nobody knows what gene therapy will do to humanity in the long run. Nobody. Not Pfizer. Not S.D. Wells. That's my problem with the mRNA shots. If they turn out to not have long-term ill effects, then I'll get on board with them. But it could be 5 years or more before we'll know that they're safe. By then, I don't imagine they'll still be needed.

Getting on board with existing mRNA shots doesn't mean I'll feel any better about future ones, btw. Until long-term effects and risks of a new medical technology are known with considerable certitude, it's irresponsible for medical professionals to promote their general use.
