Moose or elk? I think it's impossible say. Larger elk tracks are 5 inches. Same with smaller moose tracks. Here's guidance on telling them apart.

I was up at property #2 today talking to my builder, when he said, "Did I already tell you about the moose tracks?"

"No," I replied. "There are moose tracks? Where?"

"They're . . . Why don't I just show you? he said.

We walked downstairs, out the garage door, and no more than 50 feet -- still in my driveway! And there they were, a dozen or so of the biggest damn deer tracks I've ever seen. Very cool!

I asked him if he had seen moose before and he said he had. "They used to be very common," he said. He believes that ticks have been killing them off. I don't know if that's plausible or not. He also said that these tracks are not from a particularly big moose - which makes me wonder how he knows that they're from a moose at all and not from, say, an elk.

I intend to go to the property again tomorrow. If I do, I'll have my camera and will post a picture. Maybe one of you can provide a definitive answer to my moose/elk question.

BTW, I've seen an elk before. I got within about ten feet of one at Yellowstone. (Others in the area at the time said it was pretty stupid of me.) The elk was huge, like a mule. Moose, apparently, make elk look small.
