The boyfriend of a transgender woman who was stabbed to death last week has been charged with her murder.
According to police, 22-year-old Elijah Cruz Segura called 911 Friday morning from a home in Milpitas, near San Jose, Calif., after stabbing Natalia Smüt multiple times.
Smüt was a 24-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican transgender woman. The two had been reportedly dating for several months.
Segura called 911 to report that somebody had been cut in the throat. When officials arrived at the scene, the suspect “had visible blood on both of his hands,” according to police.
He led authorities to Smüt, who was badly hurt. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Segura was arraigned Tuesday in a San Jose courtroom, the East Bay Times reported. He pleaded not guilty to a murder charge with a weapon enhancement for his reported use of a knife.
Smüt was a “beloved drag artist and entertainer” of the South Bay area, known for her “motivating and creative spirit, captivating performances, and her love for advocacy within the community,” according to the LGBTQ advocacy organization Project More. ...
Prosecutors have not given a motive for the killing.
If convicted, Segura could face life in prison.
