Police shoot suspect in murder of 7-year-old girl during attempted carjacking
Law enforcement officers with the Chicago Police Department shot a man accused of murdering a 7-year-old girl while trying to apprehend him.
Police tried to arrest one of the suspects wanted in the murder of Jaslyn Adams, 7, and the shooting of her father, Jontae Adams, 28, on Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from the department.
They attempted to stop the suspect, who was traveling on I-290, but he crashed his vehicle on the shoulder. The suspect allegedly got out and tried to carjack a vehicle with a family in it, said Police Superintendent David Brown, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The suspect was shot multiple times but is expected to survive, said police spokesman Tom Ahern.
Police recovered two guns belonging to the suspect at the scene, they said, though it’s unknown if the assailant fired at officers.
The specifics of the arrest, including a use of force investigation, are being looked at by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.
The Adams were in a McDonald’s drive-thru Sunday afternoon when two people got out of a gray vehicle and allegedly opened fire in their direction. Police believe the shooting was gang-related and think it’s connected to another Sunday shooting at a Popeyes drive-thru window. Both of the victims, a 33-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were shot.
There were five people who lost their lives as a result of gun violence in Chicago last weekend, while 22 more were wounded, according to the Chicago-Sun Times.
