That's the sort of network infrastructure that governments often build.

Along with freeways, railroad networks, canals etc.

These sorts of things tend to pay for themselves over the long run.

As do sources of power and the networks that go with them.

They provide assets the private sector can employ to generate wealth. In doing so, the assets generate their own income and the private sector generates taxable profits.

Very much worth doing when interest rates and inflation are low. Not necessarily otherwise.

The GOP will oppose it, of course. They will say this is what the private sector does best. But the private sector tends to wish to avoid universal coverage in favour of building only those parts of networks from which they can garner a return.
