A different black American presenter casually calls Piers Morgan a racist.
Sharon Osbourne asks for examples.
None are given. The explanation: he is racist because he doesn't support Meghan in her claims that others are racist.
It is beginning to look to me like some folks use the race card rather liberally.
In such an environment, is it any wonder that liars and manipulators play the card in the first place?
If an interviewer, such as Oprah Winfrey, fails to challenge people on their claims that others are doing nasty things, then she provides a platform for potentially false claims. How far is she responsible for disseminating material that is either defamatory or casts a shadow over a group of unnamed people made to seem like villains? How much is she responsible for the wider political environment in which people are so easily mislabelled?
I think she is, in part at least. Along with other interviewers of a similar sort, who let their guests level accusations unanswered.
That's surely the reason Oprah was chosen by Meghan to do the interview. Because she is a soft touch. And Meghan needed someone who wouldn't challenge her claims to help promote them.
In my view, Oprah has a credibility problem.
It's also a shame that there's an audience for such bilge.
She might cure the problem this way: interview Piers Morgan and give him a platform to talk about Meghan in which his opinions are also treated sympathetically and are left unchallenged. Perhaps that interview could also be done with an East Mountain Drive backdrop.
[ps this is the same issue as with the metoo movement - liars see an opportunity, grey areas disappear, bad laws are written, the public conversation is only good for the self-righteous types of people]
