This series of events really crystallised the contempt the EU has for the UK.
It was why we left the EU.
And it continues today in spite of the recent trade deal.
It is now clear the decision to leave was sensible in the face of European hostility and resentment.
It is also clear that the UK argument that operating as a sovereign nation has some major advantages to set against any claim that there are economies of scale in remaining in the EU.
Not the least of these is the ability to take decisions quickly when the circumstances demand it. The 27 nations of the EU spent months haggling over price and choices of vaccine while people were dying, whereas the British principle was "stop deaths asap" with the result that Britain is months ahead of the EU in its vaccinations.
Hopefully, they will see that charting a course to a respectful relationship is a better idea than contempt, followed by jealousy when things don't pan out as hoped.
