Ouch.

The EU is 5 months behind the UK in ordering the Novavax vaccine as well. It is 90% effective. The UK has 60m doses ordered and the UK is where the doses get manufactured.

Poor old EU Health minister Stella Kyriakides. Incompetent who clearly has got where she is by shameless bullying. She's trying to queue barge to mask her own failures in signing second rate deals. But she's exposed again as not getting the contracts signed early. And so EU citizens are going to be out of luck again.

No one reading the EU contract with AZ reads it the way she wishes them to. It's a best efforts contract. The best efforts terminology doesn't end simply because she wishes it to. These contracts don't work like Greek butchers shops where you can push to the front of the queue because you feel important. You need the contract to specify your rights under the terms of the deal, or you don't have them.

She's just making it up as she goes along.

I expect the EU will work a bit faster on its pre-orders from now on.

That's where it went wrong. If the drug company knows it has the sale, it can invest in its manufacturing facilities upfront.

The UK also now knows it can't rely on EU manufacturers, so will make sure all of its manufacturing is done locally and that the companies cannot have overlapping demands from the EU (because it queue-barges).
