Ted Kaczynski (the UNABOMBER) might have appreciated a good TEOTWAWKI when he was off living in his cabin in the wilderness. Most of us would not. After many, many years of trying to prepare for TEOTWAWKI, it is obvious to me that no normal person can ensure much of anything in TEOTWAWKI. If survival can be ensured, then it probably isn't TEOTWAWKI! I guess that becomes part of my definition for it. What everyone should agree about TEOTWAWKI is that some of its forms may not be survivable regardless of how much prepping they do: The sun going nova. A full-blown nuclear war. An invasion of the Earth by Kzin warriors. Preps aren't going to matter if those things happen. I choose to not worry about them. They're incredibly unlikely and, prepping is pointless. Of those that remain, most are unlikely. Even the one I do think likely - failure of the American dollar - may not happen in my lifetime. (I think it will.)

Is preparation for TEOTWAWKI even worthwhile? I think so, though some people shouldn't bother with certain scenarios. Diabetics with a long-term need for insulin can forget about crises that reduce civilization to utter barbarism, for instance. (Most of us can forget about those scenarios. We won't survive them.) But since TEOTWAWKI has many forms with varying degrees of severity, preparation can help everyone. Most of prepping includes things that are useful in a variety of TEOTWAWKI scenarios... and even in scenarios where TEOTWAWKI doesn't happen at all. Growing your own food, for instance, has benefits that go well beyond TEOTWAWKI preparation. Same for moving to the country, forming friendships with people in your community, having a variety of tools on hand, developing some practical skills, and learning to defend oneself.

What I've found is that it's impossible to fully prepare for TEOTWAWKI. Nobody has the time, the space, the resources, the energy. And you probably won't get the scenario exactly right anyway. None of us can tell the future accurately. But some prepping is easy. There's really no excuse for letting the car's gas tank drop much below HALF before getting a refill, or failing to stock the pantry. They're little things, but in some situations they might make a difference. And that's what prepping for TEOTWAWKI is about.
