Be sure to take along for the owner a peace offering also.

They could be mad but if there is a legal access wayon land that is in between two houses, that's not your fault. I am not quite sure why anyone would build a house next to a potential road anyway...
Good luck with the meeting. I do hope it goes well. I am actually glad that you may have this option of staying safe trying to get in and out of your property instead of endangering your lives.. Smart move sir!

Best wishes !

I think I've mentioned that my long driveway is steep, especially at the start. It's not so steep that it'd normally scare you, but it IS steep enough to kill you if you ever have the misfortune of driving it after an ice storm. I'm giving thought now to widening the driveway so as to give us a chance of surviving a slide.

But I'm also considering something I thought about and rejected a long time ago, entering the property from the west instead of the south. It wouldn't be steep, but doing so has two big problems:

1) It would make for a REALLY long driveway... half a mile at least, I'd guess.
2) While I own almost all of the land that would be involved, I don't own the final 100 yards. That, however, is described on my deed as a "county road" and as "public access."(But it looks like a nice lawn between two homes that are about 50 feet apart.) Moreover, the deed says that along about 1962, the owner of the land granted its use for purposes of access to whoever owned my land. All in legalese that has me not QUITE sure that I'm understanding it.

So, I just hired a lawyer to make sure I'm in the right before I knock on the door of the landowner to tell him that I'm going to start driving on his lawn. Somehow, I don't think he'll be pleased, but maybe chatting with him first will keep him from coming after me with a shotgun.
