Good point made by someone: if an econmy shrinks by 30% and then grows by 30%, it ends up a lot smaller.

ie initial condition: economy = 100%.

reduction by 30%: economy = 70%.

30% growth: economy = 91% of its original size.

This is the kind of situation where multiplying quarterly numbers to produce annual ones doesn't work.

Quarterly growth was 7.4%. It wasn't 30 or 35%.

It also dipped by a bit more than that in the first half of the year.

The net effect is the US economy is in bad shape, but it has made up some of the lost ground.
