Remove the hard drive but just drill a whole bunch of holes thru it . Spinning discs don;t spin and get read when they looks like swiss cheese...

OK. If you truly want to erase an external hard drive. . .
Buy a new external hard drive. Copy over only the things
you truly want to keep. Then you can shoot holes through
the old drive . . . beat it into submission with a BIG
hammer . . . take it apart and use the platter(s) for
frisbees . . .
Or buy software that can truly erase an external drive and re-use it.
