I agree with everything you just enumerated ... which makes me wonder if Biden's handlers will want to cut their losses, now, instead of taking the chance that Trump will simply do more of the same in Debates #2 and #3?

I think it's a strong likelihood that the Debate Commission, which is no friend of Trump or Republicans, in general, is going to try to impose some pretty unacceptable terms. When President Trump objects to some of these new conditions ... and he will ... I think the plug might be pulled on the last two scheduled debates.

We shall see.

Re: “...likely designed to provide an excuse for canceling the second and third debates. ”
I think it would be a huge mistake for Biden to do that. IMO, Trump came across as far stronger than Biden… stronger than Biden + Wallace, in fact. He got Biden to show his ugly and rude side - which eliminated the argument anyone might have that Biden is the more "presidential" candidate. He got Biden to disavow the Green New Deal, to tell Pennsylvania and West Virginia that his Administration will end fossil fuels in America (and destroy those two states' economies), to strongly imply that he will pack the Supreme Court and push for D.C. and Puerto Rico to become states, to confirm that there isn't a single law enforcement agency in the United States that endorses Biden, to admit that he has never asked the governors of the states most harmed by riots to put an end to them, and to strongly imply that he does not favor law and order in our country.

If Biden, who is scarcely even campaigning, really wants to leave the Debate #1 audience with those perceptions and not try to change their minds in a second debate, then so be it. Trump kicked Biden's butt. Biden needs a second debate more than President Trump does.
