I think I'll wait and see if there is any more expression of
interest. If so, then, yes. If not, asking question in here
should not take up a lot of space.

A while back I looked at 'Object Oriented Programming' . . .
and it seemed like a lot of buzz words and not much more.
Now that I'm into this on line course, I've learned a bit
about how that O.O.P. stuff is implemented and it looks
very very interesting. That Turtle Graphics - each turtle
created is another object. Each with its own tool kit and
parameter set for what it is doing, where it is, etc. etc.

Interesting stuff.

In the course I'm about to start getting into how files
are opened and read and written to etc. etc.

Zimbler,

You asked a number of questions, so I'm going to respond with insertions to your post:

First problem I am having with the Base I have installed is it is telling
me I must have a 'JRE' - Java Runtime Environment - installed. I've
downloaded one, but it is not installed yet. (Any suggestions as to how
dangerous that might be to my system?) Java is a memory hog. If you don't have resources to spare, it'll be a problem. And as with any tool, you have to keep Java's patches current or you run the risk of being hacked. I *assume* you've got a decent firewall, an antivirus package, and a security scanner. If you don't, get them. Decent ones are out there - for windows at least - for free.

I'm not particularly concerned about JRE, but I don't know much about it either. I'm hoping that I can keep JRE disabled except when it's needed by BASE. If that's the case, then JRE won't be an issue. . . . I just found that it's as easy as "Change the value for deployment.javaws.jre.2.enabled to false for the JRE versions which you want to turn off" in the C:/Users/Admin/AppData/LocalLow/Sun/Java/Deployment/deployment.properties file. Then, of course, a reboot will probably be needed.

I found and downloaded version 7 of the Libre office. . . But I expect
it will be a few days before I set something up and try seeing
just what it does for me.

Are you familiar with data base programming at all? I did a lot of programming with R:base about 25 years ago. And I did some very simple things in Access around 2000 - I wrote web pages that transacted with an Access database so that users could look things up. But they were really basic things. I don't have any need to do more than that today. I doubt I'll want create any databases with more than four or five related tables. It's been a while
since I designed and implemented Access databases . . . I've done a lot
of using the ones I designed and built . . . For a while I was learning
how to use Visual BASIC and program inside Access . . . But that has
been a while back now.

These days I want to learn Python programming (Same here. I'm doing a lot with Lazarus, too.) - but I'm certain a
real database program will make running databases easier and
simpler than trying to 'roll my own' in python.

Lastly, should we plan on trying to help each other learn this stuff?
(Any lurkers interested in any of this stuff? We could open a new
forum if there are.) Sure. I'd be up for that. Why don't you create a 'PROGRAMMING' forum and anyone who wants can read and/or participate in it?
