This took place right here in Orange Co.
It seems that for years the sheriffs department has been lax when it came to booking evidence. State law says that it had be booked before the end of the shift on which the incident took place. Unfortunately for years this was not followed very well, often evidence wasn't booked for several days and sometimes not at all, ending-up being lost or stolen. However, the cops involved in the incident where the evidence was not handled properly, they almost always wrote in their reports that the evidence had indeed been booked as required by law and department policy. Anyway, two officers were finally charged when this came out as they were notorious when it came to writing false police reports. At the grand jury hearing they claimed that they were unaware that it was illegal to file false police reports since this is what they had been doing for years.
The two officers were fired after being allowed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor that resulted in no jail time, no fines and just one year informal probation.
