is that the picks for SCOTUS are so much a matter of politics.

Terrible appointment structure too.

For myself, I think it might work better with many more justices and single term limits, so that one or two random deaths have less of an effect. If there were, say, 25 justices, you could afford a few subject-matter specialists, as well. And if a term was limited to, say, 15 years, the choice of one individual would have less of a long term effect.
