1776 Commission version of patriotic history is not history. It's not even patriotism. Only the unvarnished truth is history. Patriotism which denies the truth will not last. Real patriotism acknowledges debits and credits: true for every country. Imperfection is normal.
The 1619 Project marks an inception point that isn't the beginning of anything. Not of slavery. Not of people arriving from elsewhere. Not of America. Not of the meaning of the United States. We believe new things as time passes. Our ideas of right and wrong change. The virtue comes from allowing ourselves to change for the better, not from whipping ourselves in hindsight for old mistakes after changing things.
