Top of the line computerized fire control system. 'Smart'
round fired? Smart as in 'self guiding'. Yeah, if the
cruise missile is within range it shouldn't be that difficult
to shoot it down.
I've been reading where the most modern tanks are equipped
with 'anti-missile' defenses. In one of the defenses if an
RPG round is shot at the tank a 'mini-missile' is launched
which blows apart the anti-tank munition.
Which reminds me of a series of science fiction stories I
have been reading. They call them 'Bolo's. HUGE tanks
equipped with monster guns capable of destroying ships in low
orbits and defense mechanisms which boggle the mind. They also
have artificial intelligence and are capable of fighting
autonomously. As in no human aboard giving them orders.
In one of the stories, this eleven year old kid befriended the
A.I. in the Bolo -which had been supposedly retired and
de-activated. Some hostile aliens left over from the previous
War popped up and the Bolo went active. The townsfolk thought
the Bolo had gone berserk . . . till they found where it was
crushing the hostiles. Seems the kid had accidently given
the Bolo authorization to deal with the hostiles.
Anyway, I can easily see where we have the technology for a
tank to take out a cruise missile. And I like thinking we
have the technology to : Radars for 'counter battery' work
which can detect all manner of incoming ordinance, calculate
the launch site, and order the appropriate fire mission from
the weapons platform most likely to successfully eliminate
the threat. Tank gets the mission that a cruise missile is
coming in, loads up a smart munition and the cruise missile
is toast.
