Hey De!

The batteries are good as long as they stop catching the cars on fire. Other than that, yes, they do have better storage life than most if not all of the other competitors.

Tired of seeing another Tesla being melted by a fire started by the battery system...

and I don't like Elon Musk even a tiny bit.. They don't seem to have as many difficulties with the rockets returning safely to be reused which to me is an enormous cost savings. I will give musk credit for that...

Re: “I might be short-sighted in this regard ... only time will tell ... but, where Tesla is concerned, I don't think there's any there, there. ”
micro is mistaken when he says that the one thing Tesla does well is rockets. What Tesla does really, really, REALLY well is batteries. Engineers working for car makers chasing Tesla have said that Tesla has a ten year lead in the battery market.

Why do batteries matter? It's because in order for solar power to supplant fossil fuels, a means of storing enormous amounts of solar energy will be needed. Solar energy can only be produced when the sun is out, after all, but people need electricity 24/7.

The hope is that people's electric cars will provide all that storage. Folks can put their cars on the grid when they aren't being driven, and the utility companies will tap into their batteries.

I don't know if this is going to work, but if it does, it's going to be a sea change in places like California and Arizona. And it could make a fortune for Tesla.
