Trump wants a person who will provide him with power over the military when he refuses to concede. I think he'll try a coup rather than step aside.
My guess is that is why the DoD made the statement that they weren't going to intervene early. They guessed that Trump is planning that. He's already fomenting violence, which will likely result in more violence if he loses.
