Have any of you ever grown peas?

This year I planted three varieties. Batch #1 had 108 plants (all heirloom), which are now well past their harvest date by design since I'm growing them for seed. Batches #2 and #3 were Ferry Morse hybrids, each with 35 plants, and they're probably reaching maturity about now.

178 plants actually aren't very many. In fact, I just picked most of the pods from Batch #1, shelled them (is that the term?) producing only the 426 seed peas shown in my photo. It took me 20 minutes to pick the dry pods and 30 minutes to shell them. It occurs to me that peas for eating would have green pods and would be considerably harder to shell. So, my question is, how does anyone EVER grow and shell enough peas to make them worth the time and effort? I don't think I even got the equivalent of one can of peas today!

LOL. Fortunately, batch #3 is SNAP PEAS, and snap peas don't need to be shelled prior to eating. Otherwise, I think I'd just write this off as a lesson learned and never grow peas again.
