I am not saying America needs a monarch.

But an apolitical body that controls the electoral system and that can hold a lawless president or congress to account is clearly lacking. And you can't ask the Supreme Court to do things it wasn't designed for.

So if I was Biden, the first thing I'd do is build that body. It might be made up of past presidents (not ones with criminal backgrounds, obviously) and retired justices from the supreme court. A sort of counsel of guardians whose patriotism and integrity as a whole is unquestionable. What the senate was meant to be but isn't.

Most of the time, it wouldn't do anything. But at times like this upcoming election, the US is going to so wish it had such a body. It's so damaging to the Supreme Court to be made to be the arbiter of the result. And it is going to be again.

I've been saying it for a long time. This is what having a constitutional monarch and not a piece of paper does for you.

In the end, during our Brexit process, people had faith in the system because the queen is the rock at the heart of government. And no one doubted her integrity. She was always there making sure the process was done properly, even if one side lost the political debate.

Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle etc, are not buildings politicians get to use for campaign purposes.

The US system depends upon the trustworthiness of the politicians. But it's politicians that are exactly the people one worries are untrustworthy. And now America has a president who is entirely dishonest, and even the election is in question.

It's the paradox of democracy that it requires something non-democratic to ensure democracy's integrity. If America continues as a single entity (not my preference!) then it has to fix this constitutional issue: how to deal with a crooked president. Nixon, luckily, had a root that was honourable. Trump does not. What now?
