Snowden's case is a great example of moral complexity.

It was disgusting that the US government developed a surveillance system of that type without proper democratic accountability and rstrictions on its use domestically (or in any free country).

It was also damaging to reveal it when it came to bad actors.

Snowden wasn't himself responsible for the problem. It was caused by the clandestine nature of the programme and the people who set it up.

I have no doubt that he felt he was doing the right thing, He didn't flee to Moscow. He ended up there accidentally.

He also caused damage to the US fight against people like Putin.

Is it a good idea for a country like America with a leader like Trump and an AG like Barr to have control of a programme like the one Snowden revealed without any accountability? I think not.

Is it good that Putin and China know the details? Nope.

Contradictory things, both true at the same time. The world is paradoxical. No surprise. But beyond a legal system that requires things to be either right or wrong and not both at the same time.

Attorney General William Barr said he’s “vehemently opposed” to any attempt to pardon Edward Snowden, despite President Trump floating the left-field idea. The former National Security Agency contractor, who was charged with espionage in 2013 for disclosing details of a mass government surveillance program, fled to Russia. Trump once called for Snowden to be executed but now he claims to be taking “a good look” at the case. “There are many, many people—it seems to be a split decision that many people think that he should be somehow treated differently, and other people think he did very bad things,” he said last week. In an interview with the Associated Press, Barr called Snowden “a traitor” whose actions “greatly hurt the safety of the American people.”
