A video of a dozen doctors claiming, without evidence, that the coronavirus could be cured and distancing efforts were unnecessary and dangerous is the latest of its kind to go viral, even receiving attention from President Donald Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr.

The video, quietly backed by dark money political organizations, underscores the difficulty in moderating misinformation surrounding the coronavirus, when treatments and public health responses have become increasingly partisan. The event that was filmed was hosted and funded by the Tea Party Patriots, a right-wing political nonprofit group that has raised over $24 million since 2014 to support Republican causes and candidates.
