I would say you was blessed Sir.

Back around 1985 to 1990 I was doing volunteer work at a place
called Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The three or four
years I was out there I did not see a single bald eagle. I think
it was winter before last I was out there one cold wintry day
and there were four of them visible from the Refuge visitor center
porch.

Mixed feelings. On the one hand DDT was a great insecticide . . .
On the other hand that stuff getting into the food chain was
not such a good thing. So they outlawed DDT and the eagles
made a come back. Good thing.

Re: "But they have become rather
common in my corner of Virginia in recent years. "
A picture of one in its nest at a nearby lake was in my community paper a few weeks ago. When I drove to Missouri, one crossed the road ahead of the van. And when I was fishing on a mountainous lake in California in '02 or '03, one flew over my boat. So I don't know about "common," but I know for a fact that they're widespread.
