...eagles will sit on a tree limb and crap all over ya if they get a chance. It's about a quart or two very liquid and solid white which makes me think this bird is kin to the chicken.

A picture of one in its nest at a nearby lake was in my community paper a few weeks ago. When I drove to Missouri, one crossed the road ahead of the van. And when I was fishing on a mountainous lake in California in '02 or '03, one flew over my boat. So I don't know about "common," but I know for a fact that they're widespread.
