I thought about it, but it would be damned foolish to do so.

It only serves to point out the inequality that irritates people over here. Somehow the US keeps demanding the incarceration of British people under American law but never gives an inch when the roles are reversed.

All the same, there's a perfectly legitimate interest of the US authorities in learning what Andrew knows. But they are doing it all wrong. They have to decide if he is a witness or a target. They seem to want it both ways.

The plan appears to be to get him to incriminate himself under oath. And then to use his self-incrimination to demand he submit to US justice. Which tells you they don't have a case against him yet. So they are trying to embarrass him into submission using the press.

Naturally he won't do so on those terms. He will paint them as bullying thugs. War via media.

That's where we are. I don't think it ends well. It's clumsy behaviour by the prosecutor. They have a shot at employing him as a discrete and cooperative witness, with immunity from prosecution. But they are not going to get anything by bullying or playing it both ways. We don't like that sort of thing.

This would be a good place for the DOJ to start learning a new way to behave. Not just re the UK but generally. The reputation of the DOJ is horribly damaged. Who trusts them nowadays?

I wonder if this is a way to deflect holding the USA woman that killed the British young man, driving on the wrong side of the road?
