(I think) by disabling updates I can keep it from
happening. It has happened again before I started
disabling updates . . . and I can't swear that the
organization managing our computers can't re-enable
the updates.
But at least with the AOMEI backup I can get things
back to where we can get our work done.
So far I suspect the problem is limited to Windows 10
32 bit - and possibly just older versions of it at
that. To my knowledge the new laptops running Windows
10 - 64 bit have not had this problem. It is within
the realm of possibility that the older hardware we
are running this stuff on might have something to do
with it.
