From your article, "respiratory droplets" (aerosol) are thought to be the main way the virus spreads. That would make masks vastly MORE important.

We had a lot of misinformation (not just errors but also lies) early in this pandemic and that assault on our understanding is continuing. The misinformation that seems most recently dominant on right wing sites concerns masks and the ability of a virus to pass through them (as an argument against masks.) However, if it's DROPLETS that are the main conduit for the disease, then it's droplets that need to be stopped much more than individual viruses. Masks are indisputably effective at stopping particles of that size.

If it's true, then the attention being paid to the size of single viruses is misdirection.

I don't know why the right is doing this. It's just as bad as the left in this respect. The right pretends the disease is trivial. The left pretends the economy doesn't matter. Both are behaving like idiots and counter to the welfare of the country. Masks, along with washing hands, are about the EASIEST thing people can do to stop spreading (and, indirectly, catching) the disease ... while also opening the economy. But conservatives don't want to wear them.

I'll make a prediction: If we open up and the overwhelming majority (70+ percent) don't diligently wear masks when they're about, a second, worse wave will be obvious in the U.S. within 2 months of full reopening. If we open in phases or jurisdiction by jurisdiction, then it'll still happen but will take longer. (I know: Not a very gutsy prediction. Summer is practically here and the 1st wave hasn't even waned, but at least its curve has flattened.)

COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning about how it spreads. It may be possible for COVID-19 to spread in other ways, but these are not thought to be the main ways the virus spreads.

From touching surfaces or objects. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.
