The big issue is what will happen when it is time to reopen the economy (ie when the virus really is under control).

No one really knows. This is a novel scenario.

Neither optimism nor pessimism are useful. But I hope it works out a bit like August in France. The economy closes down for a month. Then resumes in September as if nothing happened.

While Bananarepublicans imagine Dems hope the economy remains in a crater, I'd be much happier if it recovers. Because life's about people.

I also hope Trump loses. But I don't hope he loses more than I hope people's jobs return.

Same thing with managing the virus. I wish the federal response had been competent. Like Obama's. It's that Trump has done a terrible job which demands he should be replaced. But I'd rather he had been competent like Obama (and Bush when it came to planning a pandemic response) and people hadn't died.

U.S. wholesale prices sink 1.3% as coronavirus triggers broad collapse in demand

Yearly rate of wholesale inflation turns negative, PPI shows

The numbers: The wholesale cost of U.S. goods and services sank 1.3% in April — the largest decline on record — as the coronavirus bore down on the economy and cratered demand.

The decline last month was the third in a row and the largest since the government reconfigured its wholesale report in 2009 to include services such as finance and health care. Economists polled by MarketWatch had predicted a 0.5% drop.
